"Official" Xanadu Shirts 2025

As you might guess, things are cooking up as we head towards the 45th anniversary, especially with what’s been going on with the Ultimate Xanadu Experience events happening all over Los Angeles. The fine folks at Popretrodisco even made up a special design for this occasion (as seen in earlier blog postings).

…..and now it seems Olivia Newton-John’s estate is joining in the fry with their own Xanadu line for the occasion and it’s……..underwhelming.

In this fanboy’s opinion, this design feels and looks rushed; it doesn’t help that the page for this merch was published just 3 days prior to this blog posting.

As you can see, the only real piece of actual Xanadu used is the Pac Pacific, but no movie logo nor anything else. Maybe they were afraid of treading on Universal Studios copyrights and that would be understandable, but then Xanadu has never been much of a priority with the studio, or we wouldn’t have fine unofficial designed shirts (simple or elaborate) from RedBubble and TeePublic with actual images and unofficial copyrighted use of the logo. A particular give and take issue to be sure….

In a deeper fan level, calling Xanadu a roller rink is misleading. It is a night club, but then, when this movie was released, there was a VERY thin line between night clubs and discos….much less roller rinks….if you want your drinks were served by a bulling member of the Thunderbirds. (please excuse the obscure Los Angeles roller rink team reference). It’s little wonder this movie confused a lot of people during its first run….those roller skates certainly didn’t help this case….
